The final part of the finale of American Idol airs tonight (April 7), so for throwback Thursday we’re looking back on where it all began: With Kelly Clarkson winning the title over Justin Guarini’s perfect hair back on Sept. 4, 2002.

After a tension-building two hours, Clarkson won with 58% of the vote, and then — in a moment that has been repeated every season — is forced to immediately sing his or her coronation song. For Clarkson, it was “A Moment Like This,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks following the release.
